The Practice of Adaptive Governance is about how we govern intelligent systems that do not stand still.
AI systems operate inside organizations, alongside people, processes, data, infrastructure and other technologies. As those systems become more autonomous, dynamic and interconnected, governance cannot rely only on policies, periodic assessments and static controls. It must also be able to sense change, respond to emerging conditions and adapt while the system is operating.
This publication explores how to design that kind of governance: safe, secure and lawful behaviour built into intelligent systems and the organisations around them.
I’m James Kavanagh. My work has spanned engineering, cybersecurity, resilience, assurance and responsible AI at Microsoft and Amazon Web Services. I now work on the practical problem of governing AI systems as they move from models and experiments into real organizational environments, teaching, coaching and delivering tools at AI Career Pro.
I’m developing these ideas through a series of articles that will ultimately contribute to a book on Adaptive Governance. Publishing them here allows the ideas to be tested, challenged and improved before they become something more permanent.
Questions, disagreement and thoughtful challenge are very welcome.
